Ted has been a practicing insurance defense attorney for nearly two decades, representing clients before State and Federal courts in Delaware, Maryland, and the District of Columbia, and as pro-hac counsel in Pennsylvania. He also defended clients before a variety of administrative bodies in Delaware and Maryland. His practice has and continues to focus on cases involving questions of general liability (automobile, premises, and products); mass casualty events and catastrophic losses; construction accidents on multi-employer jobsites; construction defects; toxic and mass tort litigation; insurance litigation; workers compensation defense; and general trial practice. His work has also included defending long-term care medical negligence claims as well as medical malpractice actions.
Ted’s cases of note include the successful defense of a client facing multi-million dollar demands as the result of a construction accident in Washington, DC. In that matter, Stotmeister v. Alion Science & Technology, et al., Summary Judgement was granted in his client’s favor on the issue of Contributory Negligence because of the many missteps on the plaintiff’s part, which ultimately lead to a deadly high pressure steam explosion. Similarly, in the worker’s compensation claim of The Estate of Kirk Anderson v. American Seaboard Exteriors, Ted and his co-counsel successfully argued that the claimant failed to demonstrate an injurious exposure to ASM through his employment and that mere “pass-through” exposure to post-remediation, encapsulated, ASM did not create a causal link between the claimant’s employment and his mesothelioma diagnosis. On appeal, Delaware’s Superior Court affirmed the decision of Delaware’s IAB, finding that it was supported by substantial evidence.
During and immediately after law school, but before entering the private sector, Ted spent 8 years working for Delaware’s General Assembly, researching policy initiatives, drafting laws, and capping his time there as a legislative attorney as General Counsel for its Joint Sunset Committee.
Ted believes in taking a pragmatic approach in pursuit of the best outcome for his clients given the facts and circumstances of each case. Whether that means one-on-one settlement negotiations, mediation, arbitration, or taking a case to trial and a verdict; Ted has ample experience in each and stands ready to advise his clients on how best to navigate the complexities of claims and litigation.
